Types of Bulkheads - All Natural Shore Protection

Boulder and ledgerock bulkheads are a great choice when it comes to all natural shoreline protection solutions. Our boulder and ledgerock seawall and bulkhead solutions come straight from local and regional quarries. While boulder and ledgerock solutions require a bit more when it comes to excavation, transportation and installation, they provide beautiful solutions straight from mother nature to your residential or commercial shoreline or lakefront property. Combined with the huge variety of all natural boulders and ledgerock available to us, our designs are the smartest and most strategic of any shoreline protection or seawall contract company in all of the state of Michigan.

Biodiverse Stones

Here at Seawalls Michigan we understand that boulder and ledgerock seawall solutions can be as much about the look as about the very important practical work of protecting the property. Biodiversity plays a decisive role in giving your seawall that natural and artful look. We carry a huge selection of stones for this reason. These include, glacier, holey limestone, weathered limestone ledegrock, Tennessee River stone, Tennessee two man, one man boulder, finger boulder, summit gray, black ice, royal gorge, trap, Choctaw tumbled and creekstone. With the experience and passion that we bring to each job, we guarantee you’ll be satisfied with the look of your new boulder or lederock retaining wall.

Rip-Rap

A lot of folks ask us here at Seawalls Michigan what exactly is rip-rap? The term comes from the onomatopoeia word “rap” as in the rap against a huge boulder to chip away smaller pieces. Rip-rap as a technical term means fractured stones used to construct seawall or other types of retaining walls. Rip-rap is often used in landscaping around ponds. It’s an organic and ecofriendly seawall solution. While differing from the boulder solutions in that rip-rap is to take a large boulder and chip it into smaller, more manageable pieces, we offer the same straight from the quarry large selection of all natural stone for you to choose.

Ponds and Small Lakes

Rip-rap often uses pieces of boulder and stone that are very small, only 3 to 6 inches. It is therefore best and most often used on smaller projects like ponds and small lakes which do not have waves. Rip-rap offers a blend of naturally-occurring looking and designed seawall. It is not particularly equipped to protect your property as thoroughly as some of our other seawall solutions. However, it offers a beautiful aesthetic and does the job perfectly well for smaller and calmer bodies of water. Rip-rap is also commonly used to line shoreline objects as a way to protect against erosion.
